STAR GARLANDS - 'not just for christmas'!

a scatter of stars
little stars
star garland and snowflake

It all began with a single star...

I started making these simple origami stars one day and have barely stopped since!  They are so very pleasing to make and incredibly addictive.  I have bags and boxes of them everywhere now in multiple sizes...

Any bonny paper that is the right weight and texture to make into a strong star can be used.  I hoard various types of paper - lush colours from specialist paper & card suppliers - wrapping paper (I drive my family demented because I carefully unwrap gifts and keep the paper) - printed envelopes - scraps from pulled Christmas crackers - all sorts of paper recycling - etc.  I sometimes add decorations to the paper strips before I fold them.

With all these cascading heaps of stars needing a purpose I realised that my main challenge was how to develop my own distinctive creations.

I liked the idea of making star garlands with my own design twists.  Every single garland is unique.  From a pile of different colours I pick out a mixture of shades of the larger stars and then lay them out, picking and chosing until I am pleased with the flow of hues and patterns.  I then add the slightly smaller stars inbetween, selecting the ones that best complement the surrounding colours.  Every garland has a wee loop at each end to aid hanging.

I am now becoming addicted to butterflies... so watch out for cascades of bonny butterflies...
